Jessica Saurwein brings us the stunning Saurwein Om Pinot Noir 2023. This wine is a pure expression of its Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge terroir. The name ‘Om’ symbolises universal creation and peace. It reflects the tranquility of its vineyard home, ‘Heaven and Earth’ in Afrikaans.
The 2023 vintage was late, offering ideal ripening conditions. It produced very healthy fruit. The wine is energetic and concentrated. It has great aging potential. Winemakers picked the grapes in two batches from two vineyards. This creates a wine with incredible character.

Tasting Notes:
On the nose, you will find red berry fruit, strawberries, and plums. It offers exotic spices and a hint of fynbos. The palate is red-fruited with beautiful flavors. The wine has a fruit-coated, fine tannin structure. It finishes with a crisp acidity. This vintage shows great depth and intensity. It will develop beautiful savory characters with time.
Technical Analysis:
- Vineyard: Sourced from a dryland vineyard. It sits at 300m above sea-level. The soil is granite with clay subsoil. The vineyard was planted in 2006.
- Fermentation: Grapes are hand-picked, then hand-sorted. Grapes undergo a cold-soak. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts. The wine goes through post-fermentation maceration to achieve optimal tannins.
- Maturation: Aged for 10 months in 228-liter French oak barrels (new and older).
