Discover the coastal brilliance of The Sadie Family Skerpioen 2025, a fascinating old-vine white blend that redefines the outer limits of the Swartland. Winemaker Eben Sadie co-ferments Chenin Blanc and Palomino from an extreme West Coast vineyard. Critics consistently award this cult wine phenomenal scores. Previous vintages have secured an exceptional 97-point rating from Tim Atkin MW and a stellar 96-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. The 2025 vintage stands out as an incredibly pure, razor-sharp expression of maritime terroir.

The 2025 Vintage Profile

The Skerpioen vineyard sits in a unique, arid location just two kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean. These old bush vines grow in rare, chalky limestone soils under a mere 300mm of annual rainfall. Battering south-easterly winds and blowing sand shape this extreme landscape. The 2025 Skerpioen displays more vibrant lemon-zest and sweet honeysuckle notes than previous years. These primary aromas spill over beautifully into the habitual, intense saline qualities of this seaside vineyard.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Freshly grated lemon zest and delicate honeysuckle meet a striking backdrop of ocean brine and crushed oyster shell.

  • Palate: This specific vintage is extremely linear, focused, and precise. It presents a slightly more restrained version of Skerpioen that emphasizes pure elegance and finesse.

Artisanal Vinification & Ageing

The team harvests the fruit carefully under blazing West Coast heat that regularly tops 35 degrees. They immediately place the grapes into a cooling room to avoid the oxidation issues of pressing warm fruit. The next morning, a gentle whole-bunch pressing occurs over three hours. The juice settles naturally in the collecting tank before moving into two old wooden foudres. Wild fermentation starts slowly over five days and can last up to six months. The wine finishes fermenting alongside its natural malolactic cycle in the spring. The juice matures undisturbed on its fermentation lees for 12 months. Finally, the cellar crew bottles this salty masterpiece directly from the lees with very low sulfur additions.

Terroir Note: The high concentration of limestone and close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean give this white blend a completely unique structural tension. It is a must-have for serious collectors.
