Discover the thrilling brilliance of The Sadie Family Rotsbank 2025, a single-vineyard Swartland Chenin Blanc born from extreme rocky terroir. Iconic winemaker Eben Sadie coveted this legendary site for 14 years before finally securing it. Critics regularly shower this highly allocated cuvée with massive praise. Previous releases captured an exceptional 98-point score from Tim Atkin MW and a stellar 97-point rating from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. The 2025 vintage stands out as a highly concentrated, masterfully tense addition to this cult lineup.

The 2025 Vintage Profile

The Rotsbank vineyard thrives on a solid rock shelf in the Aprilskloof region of the Paardeberg mountain. Vines survive in a shallow layer of soil measuring a mere 30 to 50 centimeters deep. The roots dig deep into tiny cracks within the stone shelf to yield intensely concentrated fruit. The 2025 Rotsbank shows incredible speed out of the gates with striking mineral, salty, and gunflint characteristics. It displays less early reduction than previous years while maintaining the signature, laser-focused “blue steel” orientation of premium Chenin Blanc.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Intense gunflint reduction dissipates quickly to reveal deep mineral notes, crushed rock, and salty sea spray.

  • Palate: This specific vintage delivers more natural viscosity than usual. However, it remains beautifully restrained, linear, and focused.

Artisanal Vinification & Ageing

The team harvests the grapes carefully under intense Swartland heat that often exceeds 35 degrees. They immediately place the fruit into a cooling room to prevent the challenges of pressing warm grapes. The next day, a gentle whole-bunch pressing occurs over a three-hour period. The juice settles naturally in the collecting tank before moving into two old wooden foudres for a spontaneous fermentation. The wine matures undisturbed on its fermentation lees for 12 months. Finally, the cellar crew bottles this pristine Chenin Blanc directly from the lees with minimal sulfur additions.

Serving Suggestion: This tightly coiled, highly concentrated white wine needs some space to breathe. Give it a gentle decant in the glass to unlock its full aromatic potential.
