Discover the stunning, old-vine majesty of Alheit Vineyards Monument Sémillon 2025, an absolute benchmark for heritage white wine in South Africa. Acclaimed winemakers Chris and Suzaan Alheit craft this exceptionally rare, single-vineyard jewel from the historic heart of the Franschhoek Valley. Critics routinely laud this label with elite praise. Previous vintages have captured incredible 97-point scores from Master of Wine Tim Atkin and 96-point ratings from Greg Sherwood MW. The 2025 vintage stands tall as a magnificent, living monument to the Cape’s rich agricultural history.

The 2025 Vintage Profile

Monument originates entirely from a single, legendary vineyard block on the La Colline farm, planted way back in 1936. These grand old bush vines grow on an elevated, south-facing granitic slope rich in quartz. True to historical Cape DNA, the block contains a mixture of unique Sémillon variations, including green, amber, rose, and mauve-skinned clones. The team picks all of these different shades together to build immense natural complexity. The 2025 version displays a lovely, deep nose of marzipan, bitter orange, and candied citrus rind.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: A complex, intriguing bouquet of sweet marzipan, rich orange oil, candied rind, and subtle wild mountain herbs fills the glass.

  • Palate: The palate offers incredible impact with a deeply textured, full-bodied core that remains beautifully bright. It brings to mind warm autumn colors and finishes with a satisfying, gently savory depth.

Artisanal Vinification & Ageing

The vineyard workers hand-sort the ancient crop before executing a gentle, whole-bunch pressing. The winemakers settle the raw juice overnight without any additions and rack it relatively clean compared to their Chenins. Wild fermentation takes place spontaneously inside neutral, older oak barrels and usually lasts for about one month. The wine matures on its primary fermentation lees in barrel for a full 18 months to build its luxurious, creamy texture. Finally, the estate bottles this rare treasure completely unfined to protect its structural integrity.
