The Alheit Lost & Found 2019 offers an extraordinary, once-off Straw Wine (Vin de Paille). This precious 375ml half bottle represents ultimate dedication to heritage vineyards. The wine uses 100% Muscat of Alexandria (Hanepoot). A Breedekloof vineyard grew these grapes, planted in the late 1800s. Winemakers dried the grapes on wooden racks for two weeks, concentrating the sugars. This creates an incredibly intense and complex dessert wine. Winemaker Chris Alheit describes the taste as “completely decadent.”
- Style: Certified Straw Wine (Vin de Paille).
- Flavor Profile: Explosive notes of apricots, marmalade, candied orange peel, and treacle. This decadent sweetness is balanced by searing acidity.
- Rarity: The 2019 is a one-time bottling, made from the last vintage farmed by the original family of the historic vineyard. Only 5,300 half bottles were produced.
- Top Acclaim: Earned a massive 98+ Points from Greg Sherwood MW and 96 Points from Tim Atkin MW.
- Aging Potential: Due to its immense concentration, it is capable of aging for 50 years or more.
Alheit Lost & Found 2019 shows a deep, smouldering amber color in the glass. Its intense glycerol texture gives a silky, mouth-coating opulence. The finish is long, persistent, and offers a subtle bitter orange peel twist.
