The 2024 Tembela Syrah offers an intriguing aromatic journey. Initially, the nose presents vibrant notes of white pepper and coriander spice, beautifully complemented by tobacco leaf aromas. As the wine opens, subtle hints of petrichor emerge, adding depth.
On the palate, dark berry flavours take the lead, seamlessly transitioning into a medley of spices. The experience culminates in a long, persistent finish, elegantly carried by the wine’s vibrant acidity.
This distinctive Syrah is a blend of two exceptional vineyards: 80% of the grapes hail from the Karibib property in Polkadraai Hills, while the remaining 20% come from Jakkalsfontein in the Swartland. This blend of terroirs contributes to the wine’s unique complexity.
In the cellar, 80% of the grapes underwent whole-bunch fermentation (or had stems added back), adding structure and aromatic complexity. Fermentation took place in open-top tanks with regular punch-downs to ensure optimal extraction. The wine then matured for 10 months in old 500L barrels, allowing its character to evolve gracefully before being bottled in January 2025.
