This Signatory Vintage Caol Ila 2013 offers a captivating expression of this beloved Islay single malt. Known for its distinct character, Caol Ila presents notes of smoked malted barley, alongside marine, vegetal, oily, and intensely peaty nuances. The distillery’s signature large, onion-shaped stills are largely responsible for the single malt’s surprisingly light and refined profile.
As part of the “Very Cloudy” range – a sibling to “The Un-Chillfiltered Collection” – this whisky is bottled from small batches of two to five casks. It’s reduced to 43% ABV without chill filtration or added coloring, resulting in a rich, highly aromatic profile and a characteristic slightly cloudy appearance.
Colour: Pale gold, with a delightful cloudiness.
Profile: Oily, smoky, and distinctly iodized.
Nose: Immediately smoky and ashy, evolving to reveal notes of coal, menthol, malted barley, bright citrus, subtle liquorice, and earthy undertones.
Palate: Richly oily and peaty, with flavors of tar, intriguing salt-cured lemons, camphor, linseed oil, and delicate white fruits.
Finish: A long, oily, and smoky conclusion, leaving lingering impressions of ashes and citrus fruits.
