The Sonvang vineyard, named “Sun Catch” for its western Paardeberg slope, achieves early grape maturity with fresh acidity. While currently multiple-picked, future plans aim for a single harvest and co-fermentation.
Winemaking involves fermenting 30% whole clusters and 70% destemmed grapes on skins for 25-30 days. The wine ages for 11 months on lees in concrete tanks and old foudres (to prevent wood flavour), then settled before bottling from the fine lees.
Sonvang is a “future-proof” single vineyard, designed with diverse varieties to create complexity where “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”
This maiden 2024 vintage displays Mediterranean rosemary and herbal aromas intertwined with bright red fruit. Youthful and embryonic, it shows a perfect slight reduction, hinting at its longevity. The powdery, firm tannins are elegant and seamlessly integrated with acidity, yielding enormous length. This wine needs time, and we are thrilled with this first release.
