Grenache, an ancient varietal gaining new ground in South Africa, excels when older vines or challenging sites limit yields, producing elegant reds.
For Soldaat, concrete tanks are filled with 30% whole clusters and 70% destemmed grapes for a 30-day skin fermentation. Post-pressing, the wine returns to 33-hectolitre concrete tanks for both fermentation and ageing. It rests on lees for 8 months, then settles for 4 additional months before bottling from the fine lees.
The Soldaat vineyard’s Grenache fills the cellar with delightful red strawberry, cherry, and pomegranate aromas, which translate beautifully into the wine. Grenache exceptionally expresses its terroir, with fruit purity, transparency, and earthy notes developing complexity over time. Its tannin textures reward patience, needing 5-8 years minimum to truly mature.
The 2024 Soldaat offers characteristic red cherry, unripe strawberry, and pomegranate fruit aromas, incredibly pure and transparent, with new hints of rose petals and perfumes. The palate features softer, sweet, grippy, powdery tannins and a long finish. This vintage is an exhibition of elegance.
