The Skurfberg Chenin Blanc journey begins with carefully cooled grapes, essential given the Swartland’s hot harvest. Grapes then undergo gentle whole-bunch pressing, and the juice is transferred to older foudres for a slow, natural fermentation, which can extend from 1 to 6 months, often finishing the following spring.
The wine remains on its fermentation lees in cask for 12 months and is bottled directly from the lees with minimal sulphur added.
Sourced from the “Rugged Mountain” of Skurfberg, with its sandy, weathered sandstone soils, this is a remarkable site for Chenin Blanc. Despite being a warm, dry area, it yields wines of immense texture and freshness.
The 2024 vintage presents riper tropical fruit alongside fresh Granny Smith apple notes. It shows a pleasant viscosity, balanced by a very bright, long acidic finish. This is a more linear expression that promises to gain richness with bottle age.
