Skerpioen’s journey begins with grapes cooled post-harvest, then gently whole-bunch pressed. The juice naturally ferments in old foudres, a slow process that can last 1 to 6 months, often extending into the following spring.
The wine ages for 12 months in cask on its fermentation lees, bottled directly from the lees with minimal sulphur added.
Skerpioen (Scorpion) comes from a highly unique West Coast vineyard, just 2km from the Atlantic. It’s marked by chalky (limestone) soils, a cool climate, and intense south-easterly winds that shape its old vines.
The 2024 vintage offers peach and citrus flavors with a hint of tropical notes, transitioning to its signature salty brine characteristics. With slightly lower acidity this year, it’s aromatic and ready for earlier enjoyment, often being one of the first white wines in the range ready to savour.
