Discover the Kloovenburg Eight Feet Red, a compelling blend that truly captures the essence of this dynamic region. This carefully crafted wine showcases the diversity of the Swartland’s terroir through its thoughtful combination of varietals.
This vibrant red is a blend of 55% Syrah (trellised), 21% Mourvèdre (high-density bushvine), 18% Grenache (high-density bushvine) and 6% Carignan (high-density bushvine). Sourced from vines ranging from 1 to 22 years old, these vineyards yield between 5-7 tons per hectare, ensuring concentrated fruit and character.
Each component is handpicked in the early morning and cooled overnight to 5°C. A significant portion of the Syrah (85%) is crushed and destemmed, with the remaining 15% fermented as whole cluster. For the Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Carignan, 30% undergoes whole-cluster fermentation, while the rest is destemmed and crushed.
A three-day cold soak at 9°C under a CO₂ blanket precedes spontaneous fermentation in open fermenters. Gentle punch-downs twice daily ensure optimal extraction. After fermentation, the wine remains on skins for an additional seven days. Each varietal is then pressed separately into neutral French oak barrels (300L to 500L), where malolactic fermentation completes. After racking from the lees and a low sulphur dose, the wine spends a total of 9 months in barrel before final blending and bottling.
