Abrie Beeslaar’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from Simonsberg, Stellenbosch, is a testament to the resilience of 30-year-old vines. Rooted in decomposed granite, Hutton, and Clovelly soils, these dry-farmed vineyards, supplemented with irrigation, yielded a small but exceptional crop in the 2019 vintage. The lingering effects of drought, coupled with favorable weather conditions, resulted in concentrated flavors. Open-top concrete fermentation, with manual punch-downs every two hours, and 24 months in French Nevers oak (50% new, 50% second-fill) have crafted a wine of remarkable complexity. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, blueberry, tobacco, cedar, and oak spice mingle on the nose, while the palate offers supple, juicy black fruit, oak spice, roasted nuts, and a touch of fynbos. Firm, well-knit tannins promise a rewarding evolution over 10-15 years.
