Viticulture
The vines for this Syrah were planted in 1998, oriented in a north-south direction to optimize sunlight exposure. The vineyard benefits from a combination of Malmesbury Shale and clay soils, which contribute to the complexity and intensity of the grapes. Moderate growth and low yields further enhance the concentration of flavors. Leaf removal during veraison helps to improve color development and tannin structure in the resulting wine.
Winemaking
An elegant Syrah style from the oldest block on the farm. 20% of the grapes were fermented as whole bunches in small vessels to add complexity and texture. The wine was predominantly aged in older barrels to preserve its delicate character, with 20% new oak from convection and water bent staves contributing elegance and finesse. The blend comprises 92% French oak and 8% American oak.
Tasting Notes
This cool-climate Syrah showcases a beautiful integration of flavors and aromas. The nose offers enticing notes of redcurrant and Madagascan green peppercorn, which carry through to the palate. The wine is characterized by an elegant, grainy texture and a complex layering of flavors.
