Inspired by the treacherous waters of Spookdraai, near Cape Agulhas, the Ghost Corner range embodies the spirit of the sea. This extreme coastal region, known for its shipwrecks and maritime lore, has given birth to wines as intriguing and complex as the stories of the sailors who perished in its unforgiving waves.
Winemaking
Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness (21-23°B) and processed under reductive conditions to preserve freshness. Crushed at a cool temperature of 8°C, the grapes undergo a brief five-hour skin contact before gentle pressing. After a two-day settling period, the juice is racked and inoculated with selected yeast. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 11°C for approximately 24 days. The wine is then matured on fine lees for four months, with regular bâtonnage, before final blending and bottling.
Tasting Notes by Sandy Harper CWM
The 2024 Ghost Corner Sauvignon Blanc captivates the senses with a vibrant nose of summer fruits, sweet melon, and fleshy pear, complemented by coastal scrub bush. The warmer vintage adds layers of tropical notes, including Cape gooseberry and kiwi fruit. The wine concludes with a zesty lemon meringue finish. Extended lees aging and the inclusion of older vine fruit contribute to its complexity and intensity. This vintage shows excellent aging potential.
