Scenes from a movie about the life of Napoleon were filmed on the Cinéma site the year before vineyards were planted, inspiring this wine’s name. This Cuvée is a selection of barrels from that single vineyard, a premium location in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, meticulously designed to produce top-quality Pinot Noir. The vineyard features high-density plantings of disease-free Dijon clones.
Fermented using only native yeasts, with a blend of 60% whole clusters and 40% whole berries in a stainless steel tank, the wine spent a total of 31 days in the tank. It was then transferred to barrel (25% new) for 11 months before bottling.
This wine opens with classic notes of rose, wild strawberry, orange rind, raspberry, and sweet spice, soon joined by a rising intensity of pomegranate. The palate echoes these bright red fruits, beautifully cut by the umami of oyster shell and soy. Fine, integrated, and wonderfully dry, the tannins possess a distinct black tea quality. Coiled and taut, this vintage is poised to offer even greater pleasure with age.
